    Maya Angelou said: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” While she was speaking of human connection, I believe the sentiment holds just as true for places.     In travel, it’s often the people who define the place. At Gmundner Lodge, the people elevate the experience to something far beyond luxury. From the moment we landed, we were met with wide smiles and effortless efficiency by the airport staff. Small gestures like this set the tone for everything that followed.

    At the lodge, our welcome was heartfelt, not rehearsed. The team’s enthusiasm was infectious, and their pride in the property was unmistakable. Petrus took us on a drive and a tour of the working farm, sharing stories and facts with the calm confidence of someone who truly knows his land. We watched as the staff interacted with the horses and animals with gentle familiarity and care.

    Ronnie, our guide for the afternoon drive, brought the bush to life with his knowledge and personality. Every pause in the vehicle came with an insight or story that deepened the experience. And later that evening, as we gathered around the fire pit at the boma, the bar staff had prepared everything we didn’t know we’d want. Blankets. Our favourite drinks remembered from the night before. Thoughtfulness in action.

    Scenery and Sense of Place

    Gmundner Lodge is set in a landscape of rare beauty. Rolling plains, distant hills, and golden light that transforms the view hour by hour.

    From the main lodge, the views invite stillness. You’ll want to rise early, not to chase the day, but to savour the quiet as night gives way to light. Our morning drives were cool and peaceful, perfectly timed to catch the bush as it slowly awakened.

    And then there are the sunsets. Whether you’re parked in the riverbed with a drink in hand or gazing out from the lodge, they offer something far more than a pretty picture. They root you to the present moment.

    One evening, we gathered for a sunset outing. No distractions. No agenda. Just a shared moment in a magnificent place. Ceramics, usually a hands-on skill, became a storytelling session. The farm tour wasn’t just a stroll through barns and fields. It gave us insight into sustainability and care.
