Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes local officials need VAR support.
MIGUEL CARDOSO SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE PSL AND SAFA
Once more, local match officials are under the spotlight after the latest series of controversial decisions in the Golden Arrows vs Sundowns game and again in the Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs match.
“I don’t like to personalise things with referees, I will never do that because I think the coach has more to lose than to win when he personalises the question, regarding [the Arrows game] you are the ones who should defend your football,” the Sundowns coach said via iDiski Times.
“You have a social impact and impact the ones who are responsible in football, it’s up to you to highlight what is good or bad – at the same time, the conditions of football, the level of coaches increase, or should increase, the level of players increase, so the level of referees should increase.
“In general, it’s not only in South Africa, it would be very important that VAR would be [implemented] in South Africa, it would help the referees, they are human beings so when they make a mistake in a game, it’s normal, it can happen.
“When it is too many mistakes in one match, it’s not comfortable, and it’s up to you [media] to look at the match and see what happens, because in a normal game we would have won, and it cost us two points that can be very important in a championship fight and morale of the team,” the Sundowns mentor concluded.
LUCAS RIBEIRO AND MIGUEL CARDOSO HONOURED
As widely expected, Mamelodi Sundowns dominated the Betway Premiership awards for February 2025.
Coach Cardoso won the Coach of the Month gong after picking up 18 points out of a possible 21. His attacking midfielder, Ribeiro, was awarded Player of the Month and Goal of the Month for his extraordinary solo goal for Sundowns against Orlando Pirates.
“In addition to being voted the best player for the month, Ribeiro’s solo run in Sundowns’ victory over Orlando Pirates in Tshwane was voted the best goal of the month, marking Ribeiro’s second successive award in the category after winning it in the January period,” the PSL stated.
“Ribeiro’s goal emerged victorious over Tshegofatso Nyama’s clinical free kick against Golden Arrows in Cape Town, as well as Shaun Mogaila’s wonder strike against Chippa United in East London,” concluded the statement.
