Here come the charter flights: heil the tourist season!

Already plenty of Italians, drawn also by the better climate

01-07-2026 by Freddie del Curatolo

Some <a href="https://absafricatv.com/stop-grouping-people-and-grow-the-economy-and-we-will-be-fine/” title=”Stop Grouping People and Grow the Economy and We Will Be Fine”>people flee the heat, whilst others chase the sun. Curiously, this year the two coincide. Whilst in Italy the summer seems to swing without compromise between sweltering temperatures and downpours that turn cities into raging torrents, Kenya offers what was once simply ‘fine weather’: bright days, ocean breezes, cool evenings and that equatorial climate which, especially on the coast, still manages to surprise those arriving from Europe

The first charter flight has landed and there’s a real sense of a fresh start. Light luggage, smiles as travellers emerge from Mombasa airport, and the road to Watamu is once again filling with Italians. It’s not just the start of the tourist season: it’s the return of a tradition that seemed to have been lost and which is now regaining its enthusiasm and confidence

With the return of Neos flights from Italy to Mombasa, the Kenyan coast has officially kicked off the summer tourist season. And the first signs are exactly what tour operators and hoteliers have been waiting for for months: hotels are starting to fill up, Italian is once again being spoken on the beaches, and the bars and restaurants are buzzing with that lively atmosphere that has always characterised July and August

In Watamu, in particular, bookings are rising rapidly and the resorts most popular with Italian tourists are already seeing a good influx of guests. Among these, the Seven Islands Resort, the Crystal Bay Resort, the Jacaranda Beach Resort and the Barracuda Inn Resort stand out; for years, they have been go-to destinations for those seeking a holiday combining crystal-clear seas, warm hospitality and high-quality services

Of course, Kenya continues to offer everything that has made it a unique destination: the Indian Ocean with its white sandy beaches, safaris in the vast national parks, unspoilt nature, African sunsets and the chance to enjoy authentic experiences just a few hours’ flight from Italy

But this year there is an extra factor that is persuading many Italians to book a holiday on the Kenyan coast.
The Italian summer, increasingly, seems to know no middle ground. On the one hand, heatwaves with record temperatures and tropical nights; on the other, sudden downpours, hailstorms and extreme weather events that disrupt entire cities. The Kenyan coast, by contrast, is enjoying its most pleasant season: sunny days that are rarely stifling, dry air, constant breezes from the ocean and evenings that invite you to dine al fresco without needing to seek refuge in air-conditioning.

It is a difference that regular visitors to Watamu and Malindi have long been familiar with, but which is now becoming a key factor in the decision-making process even for those visiting Kenya for the first time

The season has only just begun and the outlook is encouraging for the entire coastal tourism sector. Restaurants, excursion centres, safari operators, sport fishermen and local businesses are looking forward with confidence to the coming weeks, when the influx of charter flights will really get into full swing

Among the most eagerly awaited new developments this summer is the reopening of Paparemo Beach, scheduled for 11 July, with a grand opening party that promises to restore one of Watamu beach’s iconic landmarks to the heart of the resort’s social scene. We’ll be back with all the details on this event in the coming days

For now, however, the best news is perhaps something else: seeing so many tourists strolling along the shore again, recognising familiar faces at the resorts and… well, let’s face it, hearing that delightful mix of Italian and Swahili accents once more – which, every summer, reminds us why Kenya continues to be so much more than just a seaside destination. It’s a place where a journey often begins as a holiday and ends up becoming a regular rendezvous with a welcoming, relaxing and surprisingly close Africa.
