Lion in the Sun brings dinner above it all

You can count on one hand the things most of us really look for in a restaurant in Dubai. For me, it’s the vibe, the food, and… the view. And just when I thought I’d seen them all, Lion in the Sun changed the game. Stepping onto the terrace, we walked straight to the edge, phones out, city below. One word: stunning. The Moon Bar’s full moon hangs above, the view of the city is endless, and that’s all it takes. High up at Mandarin Oriental Downtown, the view sets the tone – the rest follows.

    The space

Best views in the city. Chic, elegant, and leaning a little more romantic than your usual rooftop spot. Perfect for a date night, a bestie catch-up, or just hanging out with friends. With a good playlist in the background, the full moon installation, and the city stretched out beneath you, everything comes together in a warm, intimate vibe that’s hard to beat.

    The food

The menu highlights Mediterranean seafood, with dishes that are delicate yet rich, refined, and full of flavour. We couldn’t resist trying the classics the chef is known for – from the earthy sweetness of the beetroot and goat cheese salad to the delicate Seabass carpaccio, the Tartare Thon Rouge Mirepoix, and the indulgent tagliolini with lobster. The Wagyu beef fillet rounds out the mains beautifully, while desserts like the chocolate mousse and pistachio flan are the perfect finish.

    The drinks

The wine list is solid, ranging from premium to ultra-premium, with selections from the world’s top wine regions. Signature cocktails are crafted with imaginative flair, using house-infused spirits and botanicals that make each sip a little story of its own. At The Moon Bar, mixology is part of the experience – artful and in perfect harmony with the space and the food.

    What’s on the bill

Expect to spend around Dhs1,300–1,500 for two people if you’re going all out on drinks, starters, mains, and desserts.

    Verdict

There’s no shortage of restaurants in Dubai with a city view, but Lion in the Sun stands out as a rooftop that is romantic and low-key, yet with the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re dining in the clouds. The full moon installation adds a dreamy, almost otherworldly touch. On top of the world with great Mediterranean cuisine and thoughtfully crafted drinks, it’s all you need for a special night.
