Team SA netball have retained their Region 5 Youth Games champion status after beating Malawi 37-32 in a nailbiting match at The Windhoek Showgrounds in Namibia, writes Mark Lemke.
From the off the contest was tight, however the South Africans had a slight advantage at the end of the first 15 minute quarter as it finished 9-7 in their favour.
The next 15 minutes were just as competitive. The deafening crowd had the arena bouncing with every goal, interception and foul. Malawi had a spell of dominance which saw Team South Africa enter halftime training 17-16.
A big second half was needed for the defending champions. “Shosholoza” echoed around the court and the South Africans responded immediately with a goal. Malawi had no intention of rolling over as they also came out inspired and energetic, unwilling to allow an easy pass. After a lengthy period of back and forth scoring, Team SA began to open a lead, ending the quarter 29-22 and 15 minutes away from glory.
The South African team were serenaded by supporters as they stepped onto the court for the final quarter of the competition and the girls delivered.
Malawi fought hard and applied serious pressure bringing the game to within four. However, Team SA held firm and defended with unwavering determination. Their efforts were well rewarded when the full-time whistle sounded. The game ended 37-32. Team South Africa are Region 5 champions yet again. How good does that sound?
Head coach Emily Mathosa spared a moment to speak on the game, “We struggled in the first half but I knew the girls had a lot more to give. They were much better in the second I am very proud of them all. The support today was inspiring and I know it fuelled us out there. Thank you to everyone who cheered us on.”
The Team SA captain, Zahrah Noah, also spoke briefly before joining her teammates amongst the supporters. “I cannot put into words how proud I am of this team. That was a very tough match but we gave it everything. Hearing everyone supporting and singing for us helped us get the job done today. This has been an unforgettable day.”
It is not certain what is next for this talented group of players, but they are certainly the future of South African netball. The heart and talent they displayed today almost guarantees that this gold is just the beginning of their fortunes.
