Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema addressed crowds outside the East London Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 30 September, as proceedings in his gun case entered their second day.

Malema is awaiting a verdict linked to a 2018 incident in which he allegedly discharged a firearm during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations. Standing alongside him was party secretary-general Marshall Dlamini, who thanked supporters for their continued backing.

The Red Berets reaffirmed their solidarity with Malema, insisting the party would stand strong regardless of the outcome. Addressing members, Dlamini said the EFF was prepared for any decision.

“We’ve been waiting for seven years. Say what you want to say – we are ready. The president is ready, and we are not scared of any decision,” he told supporters.

Malema himself said he would withhold further comment until judgment is delivered. However, the party has labelled the charges against him “politically and racially motivated.”

The case, which has stretched on for years, continues on Wednesday, 1 October. Magistrate Twanet Olivier is expected to review the evidence before handing down the final judgment.

Malema faces multiple charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, contravening the Firearms Control Act, and endangering lives. His co-accused, former bodyguard Adriaan Snyman, also faces charges under the same Act.

The alleged incident took place at the EFF’s fifth birthday celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
