Captivating getaway seekers with its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, myriad outdoor activities and vast ocean, Knysna sits proudly between lush forests and the Indian Ocean.

More than a town filled with awe-inspiring scenery, it offers various experiences for nature lovers, adventure chasers or those who want to unwind in a tranquil setting, even if only for a weekend.

Knysna greets visitors with rolling mountains, quaint houses, a buzzing main road with local stores and businesses, as well as the town’s iconic lagoon. While activities and sights are plentiful, there are a few must-dos you really shouldn’t miss.

Start your journey by marvelling at the iconic Heads, two massive sandstone cliffs guarding the border between the lagoon and the ocean. Stroll along the cliffs to various lookout points for magnificent panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

Hidden among the cliffs, you will find the Featherbed Nature Reserve , which you can only access via a 30-minute ferry ride (tickets available at the Knysna Waterfront. The ferry takes you to the start of your Featherbed experience, and then a vehicle whisks you to the top of the reserve.

Having taken in the view from the top, hike down to the restaurant on a route with even more breathtaking views, such as phenomenal sea caves, enchanting waterfalls and private beaches.

The hike will have helped you build an appetite. It’s time to enjoy a delicious buffet-style lunch at the reserve’s restaurant deep in the forest.

The Knysna lagoon is home to many boat cruises, including the iconic John Benn. A cruise aboard this double-decker floating restaurant is not to be missed.

A sunset cruise at Thesen Island is a great way to end a day in Knysna. The water can get choppy, but hold on tight, as the bumpy ride is worth it. Fortunately, the boat captains are highly skilled and will not approach the mouth of the ocean unless it’s safe.

With your feet back on terra firma – and since you are at Thesen Island – grab dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants.

As you’re in Knysna, oysters will always be on the menu. Check out Sirocco or 34 South Tapas and Oysters on the water’s edge. Mouth-watering food and a view of the lagoon? What more could you ask for?

It’s been a jampacked first day in Knysna, and it’s time to rest before another full day of adventure. Visit St James of Knysna  hotel for a touch luxury accommodation, a view of the lagoon and a 15-minute drive to Pezula Golf Estate – which should also be on your Knysna bucket list. Pezula Estate is home to Noetzie beach, where you can take a moment of calmness to enjoy a peaceful day by the ocean away from the bustling town centre.
