The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has launched a 30-day internal investigation after police found the party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene, at the Sandton residence of murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie confirmed that Kunene, who also serves as Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, is on special leave while the matter is probed.

“I believe Kenny 100%. I can’t expect everyone to believe him, hence we are launching a full investigation to prove what we know, which is that he is innocent,” McKenzie told reporters. “We will share the process and findings,” he added.
Kunene, speaking to the media on Tuesday, said he was at Molefe’s house to coordinate an interview for his online news platform. It was during this time that law enforcement arrived to arrest Molefe.
Murder Accusations Shake Political Circles
Katiso “KT” Molefe, the man at the centre of the arrest, is accused of orchestrating the murders of popular musician DJ Sumbody and engineer Armand Swart.
Swart was reportedly targeted after his company flagged alleged price inflation in a Transnet tender—an act believed to have triggered the deadly retaliation.
The revelation of Kunene’s presence at Molefe’s home has sparked fierce criticism, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng demanding his immediate resignation or dismissal by Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.
The party argues that Kunene’s continued role as the city’s transport MMC is untenable under the current cloud of suspicion.

“He’s My Brother”: McKenzie Vows Impartial Investigation
In a Facebook Live broadcast on Tuesday, McKenzie revealed that a legal team of high integrity will oversee the inquiry. During the investigation, Kunene will not participate in any party or municipal duties.
“Kunene will be investigated by lawyers of good character. While he’s being investigated, I’m going to remove him from being an MMC,” McKenzie said. “I’m also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done. That’s the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life.”
McKenzie expressed deep personal loyalty to Kunene, describing him as more than just a friend: “People think he’s my friend but he’s not. He was my friend, but he went past that and became a brother I never had. He’s the one person who made me change my life in jail. He’s the godfather of my children. I’m the godfather of his children.”
Despite his emotional defence, McKenzie insisted that no one in the party is above scrutiny. “He would never get involved with murders. That’s not him. He’s a good man. He would never hurt a fly, he’s not a violent person. I know he’s innocent.”
The investigation is expected to conclude within 30 days, with the party promising to make its findings public.
