Kenyan mobile network operators and other stakeholders in the telecommunications sector are collaborating to ensure the country is ready to provide connectivity for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Steve Isaboke, principal secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, on Wednesday chaired the Joint Steering Committee on Connectivity Preparedness.
Isaboke said the tournament presents an opportunity for Kenya to strengthen its position as Africa’s digital hub, with reliable connectivity central to that ambition.
The stakeholders are focused on ensuring seamless communication within and beyond stadiums while strengthening connectivity across the wider tournament ecosystem, including airports, convention centres, hotels and other supporting infrastructure, Isaboke said.
“This is also a long-term investment. We are laying the foundation for stronger connectivity across sports facilities and supporting infrastructure throughout the country,” he said.
Isaboke said the initiative recognises ICT as a critical enabler, with connectivity extending beyond internet access to support security operations, broadcasting, emergency response, digital payments and the experience of millions of fans.
“This collaborative effort showcases how ICT quietly enables national ambition, not just from the sidelines, but at the centre of economic growth, innovation and Kenya’s global competitiveness,” he said.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is among the key stakeholders involved in the preparations.
David Mugonyi, director general and CEO CA Kenya, said: “CA remains committed to working alongside all stakeholders as a trusted partner, leveraging our regulatory mandate to ensure that Kenya delivers a world-class digital and connectivity experience that reflects our collective ambition and readiness for AFCON 2027.”
Kenya will host the tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda in June and July 2027.
