Kenyan Govt Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Violent Gangs
Security forces have been orderedto intensify crackdowns nationwide on violent gangs, locally known as “goons”. While Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen accused opposition politicians of exaggerating the issue, he said there is a growing national consensus that these criminal elements must be dealt with decisively.
Murkomen said political leaders across the spectrum historically relied on such groups for political events, pointing to the 2024 anti-government protests. He alleged that politicians – including impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua – mobilized groups that engaged in violence, targeted businesses, and attempted to storm Parliament.
