Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has moved to reassure the public after three radiological contamination incidents were recorded at the Koeberg Power Station during routine maintenance.
The incidents occurred at Unit 2 on 30 June, 2 July and 7 July, when a power interruption disabled ventilation systems supplying temporary maintenance tents inside the reactor building.
Briefing the media on Sunday, Ramokgopa said the contamination was contained within the reactor’s containment structure and did not escape into the environment, meaning there was no threat to residents living near the plant.
He said the workers exposed had received very low levels of radiation, describing the doses as less than those from a standard X-ray.
“So, I really want to say to the country that we are safe, there’s no need for apprehension or anxiety. We’ll clarify with a great level of detail, and we’ll also illustrate that the level of exposure at Koeberg is in fact the exposure we encounter in our daily lives.”
