African National Congress (ANC) NEC member Mmamoloko Kubayi has issued a strong warning against leaders who chase internal power while remaining disconnected from the lived realities of South Africans.
Speaking during her keynote address at the opening of the 7th ANC Nelson Mandela Regional Conference at Nelson Mandela University, Kubayi stressed that the organisation must urgently realign itself with the needs of ordinary people.

The much-anticipated conference, repeatedly delayed due to branch disputes, finally convened with a call for unity and a return to core ANC principles.
ANC Must Refocus on Community Issues, Says Kubayi
Kubayi emphasised that the party can only regain trust by addressing real challenges faced by communities across the country. She urged leaders to recommit to their roles and reconnect with the constituencies they claim to serve.

“Sometimes I say this thing, but I don’t know how you say you are a leader of society when your own city doesn’t know that we’re of ANC. When your own ward does not know that you hold a position of power in the ANC, but you call yourself leaders of society,” she said.

Her remarks come as internal tensions and disputes continue to stall ANC regional processes. Kubayi said the organisation cannot afford leaders who remain absent from grassroots issues while positioning themselves for power.
“But you are not active on anything from the ANC. You are not found on anything that deals with issues society expects from the ANC,” she added.
Kubayi’s comments set a firm tone for the remainder of the conference.
