MONROVIA – Liberian President Joseph Boakai has taken decisive action against government officials who failed to comply with mandatory asset declaration requirements, suspending them for one month without pay or until they submit the necessary disclosures. Boakai’s move seeks to restore public trust in government institutions.

In a statement issued by the presidency, Boakai emphasized that asset declaration is not merely a bureaucratic obligation but a fundamental pillar of good governance. “Transparency is the foundation of a credible government,” he stated. “Every official entrusted with public service must be accountable to the people. Asset declaration is a legal requirement, and those who fail to comply will face consequences.”

The suspension affects officials across various government ministries and agencies who missed the deadline to declare their financial assets, as mandated by Liberian law. Under the country’s anti-corruption framework, public officials are required to disclose their wealth and financial interests to prevent illicit enrichment and abuse of power.

Boakai’s administration has pledged to crack down on corruption, a persistent issue that has undermined Liberia’s development efforts for decades. His latest move is seen as a warning to officials who may attempt to sidestep accountability measures.

Anti-corruption advocates have praised the president’s decision, calling it a necessary step toward rebuilding confidence in Liberia’s governance. “This sends a strong message that corruption and lack of transparency will no longer be tolerated,” said a spokesperson for the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL).

Meanwhile, some political analysts believe that Boakai’s enforcement of asset declarations is also a strategic move to distinguish his administration from past governments, which faced criticism for lax anti-corruption measures.

With Liberia’s economic recovery heavily dependent on international partnerships and foreign investments, Boakai’s leadership is under pressure to demonstrate a firm stance against corruption. His latest action signals that his administration is prepared to take tough measures to uphold integrity and accountability at all levels of government.
