A recent close encounter with an armed robber near Cape Town International Airport has raised significant alarm among locals, sparking urgent discussions about safety in one of the City’s busiest corridors, reports Cape {town} Etc.

The incident, shared by resident Clint Ferguson on social media, describes a terrifying encounter that unfolded just minutes after he dropped a family member at the airport.

In his post on the Western Cape Crime Alerts Network, Ferguson recounted the alarming moment he was ambushed on the Somerset West turnoff after passing a nearby petrol station. ‘A coloured guy walked towards my car holding a gun at my windscreen,’ Ferguson wrote.

‘I was in disbelief slowing down, then he ran to my side and held the gun at my face next to my closed window, waving a hand for me to get out of the car,’

Describing the perpetrator’s menacing demeanor, Ferguson added, ‘He meant business and had a scary look on his face! I knew my only way out was to duck and put my foot flat on the accelerator which I did,’

As a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by motorists along these routes, Ferguson urged all drivers to remain vigilant: ‘Make sure you lock your doors the minute you get into your car and don’t have your window open!’

His words resonate profoundly in a city grappling with safety concerns.

This alarming incident comes on the heels of the City of Cape Town’s recent decision to invest R180 million in constructing a security wall along the N2 highway, particularly in the areas surrounding Cape Town International Airport.

This infrastructure project highlights the urgency of addressing rising crime trends, following a series of tragic events, including the heart-wrenching case of retired teacher Karin van Aardt, who lost her life navigating the perilous route with her husband.
