The enthusiasm, passion and fighting spirit of Lonwabo Majeke has spread through Team SA in Angola for the African Youth Games. Physios, media and management officials have flocked to the Kikuxi Villas Club to support both her and Hlumani Kekana, as they prepared to face Tunisia in the mixed doubles final.

“I have always appreciated any support I get at any game. It is so important in a sport like this because you spend so much time alone with your mind and it can be so difficult to maintain control in those high-pressure moments. I try to make it as easy as possible for people to support me. I love to talk to people and be friendly. When you guys all came to my quarter final yesterday, it meant the world to me. I want to put in as much effort as I can to support Team SA and make the team proud. The people that support you are the most important people in the world.

“Having Team SA supporting me at my games makes me feel loved and cared for. I feed off that energy and put it into my game. I will never stop fighting when I am on that court.”

The humble teenager from East London is most inspired by Serena Williams and plays with the fire and conviction synonymous with tennis’ most dominant athlete. “I love the competitiveness of tennis. It is such a beautiful sport with endless styles, stories, and magical moments. What Serena did in and for this sport, especially as a black woman, is incredible. She has inspired generations of tennis players to come. I want to inspire kids the way she inspired me.”

Majeke has already picked up the singles bronze medal, and her ability on the court, and her infectious character off it, already point to the legacy she wishes to leave behind. “I want to be remembered for my fighting spirit, and I would want people to think of me as kind and friendly and always willing to help.”

The first building blocks of this legacy have been laid out. No matter the tournament, no matter the match, no matter when or where, Majeke’s legacy will grow to inspire the next generation, much like the inspiration that touched her heart.
