Miranda Coetzee and Zenéy van der Walt were in a record-breaking mood for Team South Africa women athletes at the World Athletics Championships, setting a new national and African 4x400m mixed relay record with Gardeo Isaacs and Leendert Koekemoer in Saturday’s qualifying morning session in Tokyo, Japan, on Saturday, 13 September 2025.
Miranda Coetzee and Zenéy van der Walt partnered Gardeo Isaacs and Leendert Koekemoer in Saturday’s morning session for a new mixed 4x400m relay National and African record in a time of 3:11:16, finishing third fastest in heat 1 to qualify for the race’s final the same afternoon.
Shirley Nekhubui replaced Miranda Coetzee in the afternoon session’s event final, and the South African quartet were a shade slower than their morning record time to finish in sixth place, in a time of 3:11.89.
The USA’s Lynna Irby-Jackson and Alexis Holmes teamed with Bryce Deadmon and Jenoah McKiver to match the championship record for gold in a time of 3:08.80, and the Netherlands set their season best time to take silver ahead of Belgium to settle the 2025 4x400m Mixed Relay bragging rights.
Earlier in the morning session, Spain’s María Pérez took the 35km walk title in a time of 2:39:01, more than three minutes ahead of Italy’s Antonella Palmisano (2:42:24 ) and Ecuador’s Paula Milena Torres (2:42:44) in a new national record. South Africa’s Jessica Groenewald came in as the first African finisher in a time of 3:16:03, in 34th place.
African champs bronze medalist Daniel Nolte will be disappointed with her 5.79m long jump qualification round to finish in 34th and final position, the four-time national champ well short of her season’s best leap of 6.56m at the Athletics SA Grand Prix 2 in Johannesburg this March.
