The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has stated that its suspended parliamentary leader, John Hlophe, had no authority to unilaterally alter the composition of the party’s parliamentary caucus, despite his senior position.
Earlier this week, Hlophe announced the dismissal of Colleen Makhubele as the party’s parliamentary chief whip and appointed Des van Rooyen in her place.

The move, however, was swiftly overturned by party leader Jacob Zuma, who subsequently suspended Hlophe for alleged ill-discipline.
Zuma had recently returned from Burkina Faso, where he reportedly met with the country’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traoré. Upon his return, he was reportedly taken aback by the internal changes made in his absence.
Zuma Reverses Hlophe’s Decision and Enforces Party Protocol
Head of the MK Party Presidency, Magasela Mzobe, said Zuma was “shocked” to discover the reshuffle and immediately acted to restore order within the parliamentary caucus.
Mzobe explained that Zuma had already appointed the party’s newly installed second Deputy President, Tony Yengeni, to oversee matters during his absence.
“Therefore, the leadership in Parliament is expected to, among others, consult the second Deputy President, Tony Yengeni, and the collective leadership of the party before any decision of this nature is taken,” Mzobe said.
Disciplinary Action Looms for Hlophe
According to Mzobe, Hlophe’s actions will be dealt with through the party’s internal disciplinary processes.
