The uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party has officially dismissed Mzwanele Manyi from his role as chief whip in Parliament, marking a swift leadership shakeup within the party. Rumours of his removal first circulated on internal WhatsApp groups before being confirmed by Deputy Chief Whip Muzi Ntshingila.
“Please be informed that Hon. Mzwanele Manyi has been relieved of his duties as Chief Whip with immediate effect. We thank him for his service and dedication to the MK Party and wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” read the widely circulated message.

In the same message, the party announced his replacement: “We are pleased to announce that Hon. Colleen Makhubele has been appointed as the new Chief Whip of the MK Party. We are confident that she will lead with strength and vision as we continue to advance our collective mission.”
Ntshingila added that the caucus fully backs Makhubele’s appointment.

‘Arrogance Took Him Down’: Inside the Tensions
Manyi’s short stint as chief whip after joining the MK Party in August 2024 from the EFF, was marked by internal tensions and strained relationships. According to a senior MK Party official, his leadership style quickly alienated colleagues.
“His arrogance finally caused him to fall on his sword. He fails to listen and protect his caucus and wants to shine in the media alone and not give anyone a chance,” the source revealed.
His approach reportedly clashed with several party members who felt sidelined. These concerns intensified after a public disagreement with MK Party parliamentary leader John Hlope.

Speech Dispute and Internal Division
The final straw appeared to be a controversial move by Manyi during preparations for a parliamentary address. He allegedly asked John Hlope to read a state of the nation speech written by party founder Jacob Zuma instead of the version Hlope had prepared.

Though the party attempted to downplay any internal divisions publicly, sources say Manyi’s actions deepened factional rifts within the caucus. His perceived media grandstanding and inability to foster unity were central to his downfall.
