Overseas travel to SA: New nation takes Germany’s place alongside US and UK
A rising market in the southern hemisphere has recorded massive double-digit growth, shaking up the traditional rankings of South Africa’s long-distance feeder markets.

Overseas travel to South Africa experienced a significant structural shift in June 2026, driven by a rapid tourist surge from Australia, and southern-hemisphere nation knocking Germany out of the top three long-distance feeder markets.
The massive influx of travellers from this rising market has provided a substantial boost to Australia’s overall recovery, alongside traditional powerhouses like the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to the latest monthly statistical release overnight tourist arrivals grew 9.8% year-on-year to 823 365 in June 2026. While regional SADC travel remains the industry’s bedrock, overseas tourists made up 17.2% (141 796) of the total, with three nations contributing 49.0% of long-distance arrivals
How overseas travel to South Africa is changing
Australia pioneered this overseas expansion, leading all major markets with a robust 18.8% year-on-year growth rate. Australian tourist arrivals climbed from 10 196 in June 2025 to 12 113 in June 2026, allowing the country to displace Germany – which saw 7 637 visitors – to secure the third spot.
In contrast, other major markets like India plummeted by 39.6% year-on-year to just 4 003 tourists, underscoring Australia’s impressive momentum.
The United States remains the undisputed leader in South African tourism, sending 40 566 travellers, while the United Kingdom held onto second place with 16 863 tourists. Air travel was the preferred mode of transport for 92.5% of overseas tourists, with the majority entering through OR Tambo International Airport and Cape Town International Airport.
Demographically, these overseas visitors skewed male at 54.3%, with a median age of 45.
This positive performance in the overseas sector aligns with a broader post-pandemic recovery for South Africa. SADC tourist volume for the second quarter of 2026 reached 2 130 193, exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 levels by 17.3%.
However, the decline in same-day foreign visitors by 12.5% suggests a clear shift in traveller behaviour toward longer-term, higher-value overnight stays across both regional and international markets.
North African market records massive seasonal surge
In another positive trend, North African arrivals witnessed a spectacular seasonal boom. Tunisia recorded a staggering 261.8% year-on-year surge for the second quarter of 2026, with tourist numbers jumping from 419 to 1 516.
Holiday remains the main driver for these international journeys, with an overwhelming 97.3% of all tourists entering South Africa for leisure purposes, visiting friends or personal reasons.
