Nigeria lands four wild card slots for Africa Scrabble Championship


Defending champion Doko headlines list  for continental showpiece in Monrovia

Nigeria secured four of seven automatic qualification slots for the 16th  Africa Scrabble Championship after the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) announced its Wild Card recipients for the tournament, scheduled for Monro

Kenya claimed the remaining three places

Reigning African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko leads the Nigerian contingent, qualifying automatically as title holder. He is joined by President’s Cup champion Cyril Umebiye, African Under-19 champion Prestige Archibong and African Under-15 champion Sophia Ekeruche

Kenya’s slots go to President’s Cup winners Allan Oyende and Nicholas Mbugua, alongside Bernard Amuke, who received the ECASA 2026 Wild Card

PANASA President Adekoyejo Adegbesan said Amuke was awarded the ECASA slot as the next eligible finisher after Oyende’s place was filled through his President’s Cup win

Under PANASA’s qualification guidelines, Wild Card slots go to winners of PANASA-sanctioned tournaments, including regional championships, held since the conclusion of the last Africa Scrabble Championship

PANASA clarified the Wild Card allocations do not affect national quotas, with each country still entitled to field up to 15 domestic players and five diaspora players

All seven Wild Card recipients must complete official tournament registration within the stipulated period to confirm their places, the association said
