Former President Jacob Zuma’s recent visit to India showed a blatant disregard for South Africa’s foreign policy and the law, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said on Friday
Ntshavheni accused Zuma of “showing the middle finger” to South Africans following his visit to the Gupta brothers in India, adding that government was reviewing his presidential privileges after what she described as his repeated defiance of South Africa’s positions on the international stage
Briefing the media in Pretoria on the outcomes of Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, Ntshavheni said Zuma’s actions had created a diplomatic problem and were unacceptable for a former head of state
Her remarks follow Zuma’s visit to the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand in late June, where he was photographed at the Siddhpeeth Shri Dakshin Kali Mandir in Haridwar alongside Ajay Gupta, one of the Gupta brothers accused of playing a central role in South Africa’s State Capture scandal
During the visit, Zuma also told local reporters he believed he would return to power
Zuma was accompanied by South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal
“It is also very disturbing that a former state president can openly and unapologetically show the middle finger to South Africans. We have lost a lot of money through the Gupta brothers’ shenanigans,” Ntshavheni said
“[Zuma] continues to show a middle finger and claims that he wants to run this country again. It shows the type of person he is, and it is for South Africans to judge.”
The Gupta brothers left South Africa in 2018 after the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture began exposing their alleged role in widespread corruption
South Africa sought their extradition from the United Arab Emirates in 2022 following their arrest in Dubai, but the request was rejected because of legal deficiencies
The brothers have remained outside the country’s reach since then
