Summer in South Africa is synonymous with sun, fresh air, and ripe, juicy fruit. For families, couples, or anyone seeking a slow, scenic getaway, fruit-picking farms offer more than just a basket of berries — they’re an invitation to unwind amidst rolling hills, fragrant orchards, and panoramic mountain views.

From the Overberg to the Cape Winelands, these farms provide the perfect mix of nature, gastronomy, and family fun.

    Why fruit-picking farms are a must-visit

Fruit-picking escapes aren’t just about the harvest; they’re about the experience. Visiting family-run farms connects travellers to local heritage, supports sustainable practices, and offers a break from the hustle and bustle. Many of these farms have cafés, tasting rooms, and accommodation, making them ideal for a weekend retreat or a day trip.

    Featured farms and orchards

    Wildebraam Berry Estate – Swellendam

Nestled in the Hermitage Valley with the Langeberg Mountains as a backdrop, Wildebraam Berry Estate is a seasonal paradise. From mid-November to the end of December, visitors can pick blackberries and youngberries, taste homemade jams, and sample liqueurs crafted on-site. Family-friendly cottages make it perfect for an overnight escape, and the annual Berry Festival adds an extra layer of fun and festivity.

    Hillcrest Berry Orchards – Stellenbosch

Set in the Banhoek Valley, Hillcrest Berry Orchards combines scenic mountain views with sustainable farming practices. GlobalG.A.P. certified, the farm offers fresh berries, relishes, jams, and teas in its on-site café and tea garden. Visitors can relax overlooking the vineyards, making it a serene addition to any Winelands itinerary.

    Chart Farm – Cape Town

Historic Chart Farm in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs is ideal for a quick city escape. The farm offers “pick your own” options in its orchard and rose gardens, alongside a farm stall selling jams, preserves, and honey. Its easy accessibility and beautiful landscaping make it perfect for families or couples seeking a tranquil day out close to the city.

    Polkadraai Strawberry Farm – Stellenbosch

Polkadraai Strawberry Farm is a family favourite from September to December. Enjoy the scenic Winelands views as you pick strawberries, take a tractor ride, or let the little ones enjoy pony rides. The farm provides a wholesome, interactive experience for children and adults alike.

    Klondyke Cherry Farm – Ceres

For cherry lovers, Klondyke Cherry Farm in Ceres is a must-visit. From late November to early January, visitors can pick both red and yellow cherries, enjoy shaded picnic spots, and experience the charm of the Ceres Valley countryside.

    Hoogwater Farm – Wolseley

Hoogwater Farm offers a diverse fruit-picking experience, including peaches, nectarines, figs, and pears. Visitors can enjoy walks or bike rides around the farm or relax by the dam’s jetty with a picnic, making it a perfect spot for a family day out.

    Blueberry Bar – Paarl

Blueberry Bar, near Paarl, focuses on organic blueberries. From October to December, guests can pick blueberries and sample a variety of products, including jams, juice, and biscotti. Its modern approach to fruit-picking adds a refreshing twist to the traditional farm experience.

    Jamestown Flower Farm – Stellenbosch

While not a fruit farm, Jamestown Flower Farm deserves mention for its year-round flower-picking experience. Visitors can gather sunflowers, dahlias, and snapdragons, with scenic river spots perfect for a relaxing break. It’s a colourful addition to the Western Cape’s pick-your-own repertoire. According to their Instagram page, the new owners have put a pause on flower picking while they make some changes and improvements.

    Planning your fruit-picking adventure

    • Timing is everything: Check seasonal availability — berries, cherries, and strawberries are all seasonal delights.
    • Family-friendly tips: Bring hats, sunscreen, and snacks for little ones; mornings are cooler and ideal for picking.
    • Combine experiences: Many farms offer cafés, tasting rooms, or accommodation, perfect for turning a visit into a weekend escape.
    • Photography: Don’t forget your camera — panoramic mountain views, orchards, and fields of berries are picture-perfect.

Whether you’re chasing strawberries in Stellenbosch, blackberries in Swellendam, or cherries in Ceres, the Western Cape’s fruit-picking farms offer more than just fresh produce. They provide an immersive, scenic escape where family, friends, and food come together in a celebration of South Africa’s landscapes and harvests. Pack your basket, grab your loved ones, and make a day (or weekend) of it — your sweet escape awaits.
