Participants at a workshop organised ahead of the 21st Plenary Assembly of theAssociation of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa(AMECEA) are urging the Church to speak out more broadly on the issue of climate justice.
Speaking at the Friday, July 17 workshop that theLaudato Si’ Movement Africa(LSM) organized in collaboration with AMECEA ahead of the July 19–26 Plenary Assembly, panelists acknowledge the influence of the Church’s voice on issues.
“If the Church Institution could use its voice more broadly by preaching through pastoral letters, through community dialogues, and by reminding others that care for creation is not separate from our faith; it’s part of our faith,”Regina Magokesaid in her presentation.
Ms. Magoke explained that by speaking out more broadly, the Church will create a safe space where victims of climate change, who she said are mostly women in the affected communities, will feel at home.
The Tanzanianclimate justice activistsaid the Church has a responsibility to use its moral authority to defend the dignity and rights of those most affected by climate change, particularly women, describing the present moment as one that calls for the Church to prioritize its prophetic voice.
