President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late South African High Commissioner to Kenya, Ambassador Mninwa Mahlangu, will be laid to rest with a Special Official Funeral Category 2.
The funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 September 2025, in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

Mahlangu, who passed away last week at the age of 72, will be honoured with ceremonial tributes led by the South African Police Service.

In recognition of Ambassador Mahlangu’s service to the nation, President Ramaphosa has directed that the National Flag be flown at half-mast across all government buildings and flag stations from Saturday, 30 August 2025, until the evening of the funeral.

“President Ramaphosa has declared that Ambassador Mahlangu will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 2 which will entail ceremonial honours performed by the South African Police Service.
“The funeral will take place at Middelburg, Mpumalanga. The President has also directed that the National Flag be half-masted at all flag stations from tomorrow morning, Saturday, 30 August 2025, until the evening of the funeral on Saturday, 6 September,” confirmed Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) held a memorial service on Thursday in honour of Mahlangu. The ceremony reflected on his decades of service and his dedication to strengthening South Africa’s diplomatic relations on the African continent.
Mahlangu’s passing marks a significant loss for the nation, as he was widely respected for his leadership, humility, and commitment to public service.
