If you’re planning to explore Rome by bus or metro, you’ll need to budget a little extra from July 2025. The city has implemented an immediate price hike on several popular public transport tickets, particularly those geared toward short-term visitors.

    What are the new changes?

Rome’s 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, and weekly public transport passes have all seen a noticeable increase:

    • 24-hour pass: Now €8.50 (was €7)
    • 48-hour pass: Now €15 (was €12.50)
    • 72-hour pass: Now €22 (was €18)
    • Weekly pass: Now €29 (was €24)

The weekly pass now costs around R603, up from R499.50 (prices in rands).

    Why the price hike?

The Lazio region, which sets fare prices in Rome, approved the increases following a request by Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri. The goal is to help cover a €22 million funding gap needed to renew the city’s service contract with ATAC, the municipal transport provider.

Gualtieri previously called the increase a “painful necessity” after the national government turned down Rome’s appeal for €100 million in extra funding.

Although the fare hike had been expected for some time, the Lazio region had delayed implementing it thanks to previous injections of regional funding.

    What remains the same?

Not all fares are going up. Prices for long-term commuters remain unchanged:

    • Monthly pass: Still €35 (R728)
    • Annual pass: Still €250 (R5 203)

The basic 100-minute ticket, which currently costs €1.50, was expected to increase to €2, but for now, that change has not been implemented.
