    SA at the World University Games: Day 9 action

    Team SA went into Friday’s action at the World University Games in Germany with a total of 16 medals. The two stars of the squad so far have been swimmer Pieter Coetze and athlete Bayanda Walaza, both who have won double gold. Swimming and athletics had both won eight medals heading into day nine.

    Friday’s schedule and results is:

    ATHLETICS

    Men’s pole vault, qualification: Hendrik van Dyk produced a season’s best 5.40m which saw him qualify for the final in 10th position

    Women’s javelin, qualification: Jana van Schalkwyk threw a distance of 53.65m which saw her qualify for the final in 8th position

    Women’s high jump, qualification: Kristi Snyman had a height of 1.81m which saw her qualify for the final in 8th position overall

    ROWING

    Men’s pair, heats: Phumelele Tshabalala and Jordan Craig finished 2nd in their heat in 6:56.95 and qualified for the semi-finals

    Men’s four, heats: Ehros Smith, Robert Hirshson, Merwe Engelbrecht and Brian Thomson were 3rd in their head in 6:32.41 and are through to the semi-finals

    Women’s pair, heats: Katherine Williams and Courtney Westley won their heat in 7:29.97 and they progressed to the semi-finals

    Men’s triple jump, qualification: Thato Kgala

    Men’s 800m, heats: Christopher Swart

    UNIVERSITY GAMES TEAM SA’S MEDALS (16)

    GOLD (6): Pieter Coetze (swimming, 50m. 100m backstroke), Bayanda Walaza (athletics, 100m, 200m), Lythe Pillay (athletics, 400m), Aiden Smith (athletics, shot put)

    SILVER (3): Pieter Coetze (swimming, 100m freestyle), Lara van Niekerk (swimming, 50m breaststroke), Team SA athletics (mixed 4x400m)

    BRONZE (7): Team SA swimming (mixed 4x100m medley, mixed 4x100m freestyle), Olivia Nel (swimming, 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle), Colette Uys (athletics, shot put), Gabriella Marais (athletics, 100m), Mondray Barnard (athletics, 110m hurdles)
