Two South African athletes are competing in the seventh Diamond League meeting of the year on Sunday.
The women’s 800m will feature this year’s indoor world champion, Prudence Sekgodiso, and the men’s 200m will deliver a Diamond League debut to rising star, Abduraghmaan Karriem.
Sekgodiso will be looking to build upon her season best time of 1:57.52, set at her most recent Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco.
That run places her third in the world rankings based on fastest time this year. The 23-year-old faces stiff competition from Swiss athlete Audrey Werro, who has the second best time this year, American runner Addison Wiley with the fourth fastest time this year, as well as two-time Diamond League Champion from Kenya, Mary Moraa. Sekgodiso heads to the Swedish capital in great form and with a good chance to claim first prize.
Karriem set a personal best of 20.15 in the 200m final of the 2025 South African Championships. This time ranks as the 28th fastest this year and has brought the 20-year-old his Diamond League debut.
Karriem provided comment on his involvement in Sunday’s event, “I am very excited to have this opportunity to run against the world’s best. The Diamond League is such a prestigious event, so I can’t wait to compete.” He will be going into the event with the second fastest season best in the field which could set him up for a dream debut.
