Shenzhen, China, has undergone a remarkable transformation — one that can be heard as much as it can be seen. The city’s ambitious shift to electric vehicles has quieted its streets, replacing the roar of petrol and diesel engines with the soft hum of electric motors.

For residents, the change is more than technological — it’s sensory. Sounds once drowned out by traffic, from the chatter of pedestrians to the chirping of birds, now fill the air. This calmer, quieter backdrop offers a rare sense of tranquillity in one of China’s fastest-growing metropolises.
But the serene soundscape is just one byproduct of Shenzhen’s groundbreaking electrification of public transport — a world first.
Pioneering public transport electrification
In 2017, Shenzhen became the first major city to operate an entirely electric bus fleet, converting all 16,000 buses. This milestone was driven by a combination of strong government subsidies, major investment in charging infrastructure, and a commitment to cutting carbon emissions and reducing fossil fuel reliance.
According to the local transportation commission, the transition cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 440,000 tons, saved 160 million litres of fuel, and reduced oil wastewater by 217,900 litres.
The momentum didn’t stop there. In 2018, Shenzhen converted its entire fleet of 22,000 taxis to electric, making it the largest city in the world with a fully electric taxi service.
Government support and long-term gains
From 2010 to 2022, the Chinese government distributed an estimated 300 billion yuan (US$41.4 billion) in EV subsidies nationwide. Shenzhen’s local government also invested heavily in charging stations, ensuring electric vehicles could operate efficiently at scale.
The benefits have been substantial:
