South Africa secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in their four-Test series against Namibia on Tuesday, following a hard-fought 2-0 win at Elkanah House in Cape Town. This victory gives the hosts a commanding advantage with the remaining fixtures still to be played.
The Proteas are competing against their northern neighbours in this series, which serves as a crucial part of their preparations for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup. That tournament is scheduled to commence in Belgium and the Netherlands in approximately one month.
Beyond the Proteas’ winning effort, the evening proved significant for three individual players. Ongeziwe Mali and Marlise van Tonder each reached their 50th senior international cap milestone, while Baylee Engelke made her much-anticipated debut for South Africa.

The home side quickly asserted control over the match. Hannah Pearce maintained her impressive goalscoring streak, netting her third goal of the series with another perfectly executed drag flick, giving South Africa an early advantage.
Despite their excellent beginning, South Africa found it difficult to establish a consistent rhythm. A well-organized Namibian team effectively stifled the hosts for much of the first half, defending with determination, disrupting South Africa’s offensive flow, and restricting scoring chances.
Namibia also posed a threat from penalty corners, but the South African defensive unit remained resolute when tested, ensuring the home team maintained a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime.
Following the break, South Africa appeared significantly more dangerous and almost extended their lead. Kayla de Waal’s penalty corner shot was superbly saved by Namibian goalkeeper Petro Stoffberg.
De Waal ultimately received due recognition for her efforts. Superb play from Stephanie Botha created an opening, and De Waal calmly slotted in South Africa’s second goal, effectively sealing the match against Namibia.

While the Proteas will be content to have secured the series with two games remaining, they might believe their winning margin could have been larger, given the numerous promising attacking chances they generated but failed to convert.
South Africa now aims to preserve their undefeated streak and complete a clean sweep in the series. The third Test is scheduled to begin at Elkanah House High School in Blouberg on Thursday at 17:00.
