Organising a honeymoon is arguably one of the most important parts of getting married. It’s the victory lap, and you want it to land. Better, then, to hand the mic to someone who’s just done it brilliantly.
Janine Gous (now Visser), our exquisitely well-travelled colleague, recently touched down from her own celebration, still sand-dusted and starry-eyed. She knows which suites whisper privacy and which glasses of Cape vintage make time slow. So, consider this your shortcut past guesswork and into post-martial glow. What follows is Janine’s from-the-heart guide to doing a South African honeymoon the way it deserves to be done.

Why a South African Honeymoon Just Works

Janine and her husband, Chris, got married last year and planned what they thought would be a quick five-day “mini-moon” (basically a post-wedding escape to wash away the potentially lingering pre-wedding worries).

But somewhere between the Cape Winelands and the coast, it stopped being a mini-moon and quietly turned into their proper honeymoon.

That’s the thing about a South African honeymoon: it gently leads you from one world to the next and gives you the rare luxury of a journey that feels layered yet still unhurried.

“Everything’s close together and easy to reach, so it all feels wonderfully effortless.” – Janine.

So, if you love the idea of multiple “chapters” in one trip, South Africa is the destination that pulls it off best. Here’s why.

Janine’s Honeymoon Route at a Glance

Janine and Chris did a whirlwind five-day self-drive honeymoon through the Cape Winelands and Whale Route:

    • Franschhoek (vineyards, mountain light, and a very convincing case for daytime drinking)
    • Hermanus (cliff walks, sea air, and the art of sitting still)
    • De Hoop Nature Reserve (wild beaches, windblown dunes, and honeymoon-level seclusion)

    The Stays

Janine and Chris’s honeymoon unfolded across four carefully chosen stops, carrying them from the rolling vineyards of the Winelands to the cliff edges of Hermanus and the fynbos-rich wilds of De Hoop Nature Reserve. Here’s a closer look at each stay.

    1. La Residence – Franschhoek

La Residence sits just outside the bustle of Franschhoek, tucked into the folds of the Winelands with mountains on the horizon and vineyards all around. It was Janine and Chris’s first stop, and it set the tone immediately: personal, polished, and quietly indulgent.

What struck her first wasn’t the décor (although yes, that too), but the welcome.

“We arrived on the Sunday after our wedding, and the whole staff came out when we parked, greeted us, and gave us a glass of wine. They made us feel at home instantly.” – Janine.

That’s a honeymoon mood right there – nothing to organise, nothing to explain, nothing to perform. And then there’s the kind of detail that only matters once you’re actually there. La Residence has its own wine, included in the rate and not sold anywhere else.

“You can’t find it. You can’t buy it anywhere else. And they give you a bottle to take home.” – Janine.

Janine and Chris are keeping theirs for their first anniversary, which is the sort of sweet, slightly strategic behaviour I fully support.

A collage reveals La Residence’s mountain-framed pool, opulent suite interiors, and elegant bathrooms, capturing the indulgent calm of a South African honeymoon.

What She Loved Most About La Residence

    • The attention to detail (fresh flowers everywhere, colours perfectly considered)
    • The staff (she even reached out to the owner afterwards)
    • The sense of being slightly removed from the busy part of Franschhoek

Best for: privacy-seekers, design lovers, couples who want luxury with warmth

Janine’s stand-out experience: An indulgent in-house feast at the in-house restaurant, perfect for honeymoon-level lingering without leaving your own little bubble.

“A lot of people forget they have a great in-house restaurant. We sat by the fireplace and had dinner right there. And then being within walking distance to your room to collapse into bed.” – Janine.

An aerial view shows La Residence’s elegant manor-style accommodation and gardens nestled among vineyards and mountains, a picture-perfect base for a South African honeymoon.

    2. Boschendal Cottages – Franschhoek

After the polish of Franschhoek’s finer things, Janine and Chris meandered to the foothills of the Franschhoek mountains and into a wide-open slice of the Winelands. Boschendal Cottages is where their honeymoon slowed down, in the best way possible.

While the farm itself is beautifully open, the cottages feel private, and suddenly you’re the sort of person who thinks cycling past pigs is a valid honeymoon activity (which, it turns out, it absolutely is).

“We ended up taking bicycles around the property, cycling past the pigs and the horses. It honestly felt like we were experiencing the Cape for the first time.” – Janine.

What She Loved Most About Boschendal

    • The on-site deli (a lifesaver for honeymooners who don’t want to eat out but still relish local flavours)
    • Being just outside vibrant Franschhoek, close enough to dip in but far enough out to feel tucked away
    • That “own little world” feeling in the heart of the Winelands

Best for: slow honeymooners, self-drivers, couples who want space and quiet

Janine’s stand-out experience: A complimentary wine tasting on arrival (a surprise for Janine, even as a consultant)

A tranquil circular swimming pool set on manicured lawn, framed by ancient trees and distant mountains, captures the unhurried elegance of a South African honeymoon.

    3. Birkenhead House – Hermanus

From the wine-soaked folds of the Winelands, Janine and Chris headed for the coast. Their route was ideally designed to encompass this iconic transition, where vineyards give way to salt air. In Hermanus, Birkenhead House is set on the cliffs above the beach, opening up into a dramatic horizon vista.

Here, the whole honeymoon mood changes. Janine experienced the same Royal Portfolio warmth she felt at La Residence, but now it was the ocean stealing the spotlight.

“The location is unmatched.” – Janine.

They only had one night here, eager to keep moving towards their next stop, but Birkenhead still delivered one of those quietly unforgettable moments that turns a mini-moon into something bigger.

“We just sat outside and watched this moon rise over the dunes, and we were like, ‘Holy crap, we’re on honeymoon’.” – Janine.

And if that isn’t the point, I don’t know what is.

A collage captures moonrise over coastal hills, sweeping ocean views at dusk, and a candlelit champagne setup inside Birkenhead House, evoking the intimacy of a South African honeymoon.

What She Loved Most About Birkenhead House

    • The easy, unforced romance, with outdoor spaces made for slow evenings
    • The iconic coastal walk straight from the property, heading towards Hermanus and back
    • The front-row whale watching (in season)

Best for: slower honeymooners, ocean addicts, couples who want romance with a view (and whales, in season)

Signature experience: Simply sitting outside, sea air, a glass of wine, watching the day gently melt into dusk.

A light-filled attic-style bedroom with crisp white linens, warm armchairs, and open doors leading to a sea-view balcony evokes the comfort and indulgence of a South African honeymoon.

    4. Lekkerwater Beach Lodge – De Hoop Nature Reserve

From Hermanus, their journey carries on along the Whale Route to De Hoop Nature Reserve – a fynbos-rich stretch of coastline where the world feels pleasantly far away. Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a secret, tucked away in a conserved corner of the wilderness.

One of the most memorable experiences is the marine walk: at low tide, you explore the rock pools with a guide, discovering the quiet magic of the ecosystem along the way.

“We learned so much. With De Hoop Nature Reserve being a marine protected area, when you stay there, you’re actively giving back and helping to preserve that area.” – Janine.

A collage shows hands holding delicate marine life, a rocky coastal path winding through fynbos, and waves breaking below, capturing the quiet discoveries of a South African honeymoon by the sea.

What She Loved Most About Lekkerwater Lodge

    • The feeling of having the coastline to yourselves, with endless dunes and sea air
    • The purpose behind the stay, knowing your time here actively supports conservation
    • The right room makes the whole experience: book the most private suite with the best view down the beach for peak honeymoon mood

Best for: nature lovers, conscious honeymooners, beach couples who want privacy and meaning

Signature experience #1: The wood-fired hot tub above the beach. Yes, you read that right.

“They have this beautiful wood-fired hot tub that is perched right above the beach. Completely private. You choose what drinks you want, and they set it up for you. You just sit there, listen to the waves, and chill out.” – Janine.

    Janine’s Recommendations

Janine’s minimoon-turned-honeymoon didn’t include the bush (safari portion), but when I asked what she’d do differently with a longer timeline (the kind of trip you’d plan if you’re choosing South Africa as your honeymoon destination), she was immediate and decisive: add safari, then finish with a few days of a bona fide beach escape.

For the beach pairing, Janine’s advice is refreshingly honest and practical: it depends on the time of year and what kind of beach you want. South Africa’s coastal payoff is huge with dramatic scenery, charming seaside towns, and beaches that feel like the ending your honeymoon deserves.

The Garden Route is a close-to-the-heart destination, with Knysna and Plettenberg Bay being the stand-out options for an idyllic experience.

    The Perfect Itinerary

Janine’s minimoon was five days (and she loved it), but if she were planning the perfect South African honeymoon now, she would recommend 10 to 12 days, or even two weeks.

    Here’s the Janine-inspired flow:

Days 1–4: Cape Town (3 nights)

    • Start with city energy and excellent food
    • Do Table Mountain, coastal drives, and one proper “we’re on honeymoon” dinner
    • Keep afternoons free – Cape Town rewards wandering

Days 4–7: Cape Winelands (3 nights)

    • One property with eclectic energy and unmatched service
    • One farm-style stay with wide open spaces and down-to-earth experiences
    • Prioritise slow mornings and one long lunch that turns into dinner

    Days 7–10: Safari (3 nights)

    Days 10–13: Beach (3 nights)

A couple walking in the vineyards at sunset with the mountains in the background.

Hand-in-hand, letting the Winelands set the pace

All the Wow, None of the Hassle

Choose South Africa as your honeymoon destination, and you’ll have wine, waves, and wilderness in abundance (and you won’t need to sprint between them). Simply show up and let the land do what it does best: surprise you.

This is the kind of trip that leaves you lighter and makes you look at each other halfway through and say, “This is it. This is the honeymoon.”
