South Africans turn to Travel Smart as Middle East conflict intensifies

Over 6 400 South Africans in the Middle East have officially registered their presence on the Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s (DIRCO) Travel Smart System as of 4 March 2026, a clear sign that citizens are taking the unfolding regional conflict seriously.

According to SA News ,the registrations come amid warnings that non-essential travel to the region is highly discouraged, and that those already there should act quickly to ensure safe passage should evacuation become necessary.

Using official channels to secure safety

DIRCO emphasised that Travel Smart is more than a registration tool; it’s a lifeline for South Africans in danger zones. The department urged citizens to register their location and keep updated with consular guidance.

“Taking proactive steps now is essential. Heavy attacks are expected to continue, and your safety is our paramount concern,” the department said in a statement.

Limited commercial flights have resumed, and citizens are encouraged to make immediate use of these opportunities to leave affected areas. DIRCO warned, however, that consular support could be restricted in certain parts of the region, underscoring the importance of registration.

    Emergency support and contact points

South Africans requiring urgent assistance are urged to reach out through official channels:

    • DIRCO Emergency Line: +27 12 351 1000

    • South African Embassy in Amman, Jordan: +962 6-461-5167

    • Jordan border inquiries: +962 5 393 3031

    • Emergency consular contacts in Israel: Mr Litha Ngwanya +972 50-520-8100, Ms Lizelle Segev +972 54-588-0698

    • Email coordination: [email protected] or [email protected]

The Travel Smart system can be accessed online here, on Apple devices, and Android.

Calls for restraint amid rising tensions

Beyond citizen safety, South Africa has reiterated calls for all parties in the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and comply with international law, including humanitarian obligations and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Government advisories urge citizens to remain vigilant, keep their registrations up to date, and ensure their whereabouts are known to South African officials at all times.

    A growing sense of urgency

Social media posts from South Africans in the region reflect both anxiety and proactive preparation. Many travellers have shared screenshots of Travel Smart registration confirmations, while others are coordinating flights home and checking for embassy updates.

With regional tensions showing no immediate signs of easing, the message from DIRCO is clear: register early, plan evacuation routes, and use official channels for consular support. In volatile situations like this, timely information can be the difference between safety and danger.
