All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and the will to slow down. On World Walking Day, people around the world are encouraged to step outside and celebrate the joy of walking. South Africa is one of the best places to do this with an abundance of trails that fit any and every need. Here are some of the walking trails in South Africa to enjoy this World Walking Day.
Table Mountain Contour Path, Cape Town
The Contour Path on Table Mountain is an excellent choice for walkers who want to combine natural beauty with the view of the city. The trail winds along the slopes of the mountain and offers views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Twelve Apostles. The walk is not too difficult, which makes it ideal for families and casual walkers. There are shaded spots along the way where you can pause for a picnic or just pause and enjoy the scenery.
Otter Trail Waterfall Walk, Tsitsikamma National Park
The Otter Trail is South Africa’s most legendary multi-day hike, but you can still enjoy a part of it on a shorter day walk. The route to the waterfall is around six kilometres there and back and gives walkers a glimpse of what makes this trail so special. You will pass through indigenous forest, cross rocky headlands and enjoy views of the Indian Ocean. The sound of waves crashing against the cliffs makes this one of the most atmospheric walking trails in the country.
Sentinel Trail, Drakensberg Amphitheatre
The Sentinel Trail in the Drakensberg is only six kilometres long but the views make it worth the walk. The path leads you to the top of the Amphitheatre, a dramatic rock wall that is one of the most iconic landmarks in the region. From here you can see the Tugela Falls, which is recognised as the tallest waterfall in the world. Walking in the Drakensberg is always special, and this trail proves that you do not need to walk far to find breathtaking scenery.
Golden Gate Highlands Trails, Free State
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is famous for its sandstone cliffs. They glow in shades of gold and red at sunrise and sunset. The park offers several walking trails that let you explore the landscape from different angles. The Mushroom Rock Trail is a gentle walk that takes you past unique rock formations, while the Brandwag Buttress Trail offers a slightly more challenging climb with panoramic views over the highlands.
Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden Trails, Johannesburg
The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort are proof that you do not need to leave the city to enjoy nature. The gardens have a network of easy walking trails that are perfect for families. The highlight is the Witpoortjie Waterfall, where you may even spot a pair of Verreaux’s eagles that nest on the cliffs. These gardens are one of Johannesburg’s green gems and provide a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Magoebaskloof Forest Walks, Limpopo
Magoebaskloof is known for its misty forests and tumbling waterfalls. The walking trails here take you beneath tall indigenous trees and along cool mountain streams. Some routes are short and easy while others are longer and more challenging. No matter which you choose, all of them give you a sense of tranquillity. The birdlife is excellent and in spring, the forest is full of blossoms.
Mental Health Awareness Month
October is also Mental Health Awareness Month, which makes the celebration of World Walking Day even more meaningful. Walking is not only good for physical health, it is also one of the easiest ways to support mental well-being. Spending time outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and sharpen focus. Even a short walk has benefits, but walking in the beautiful landscapes of South Africa adds something truly special. It reminds us that caring for our mental health can be as simple as spending time in nature.
