Leoni Smit’s Masculus – The Male Domain has long been celebrated as a serious exploration of interiors, masculinity, and psychology. Over three years, Smit crafted a seven-kilogram testament to male life—measured, exacting, and uncompromising.

But now, that world has found a new form of life on screen with Tussen mure, a thirteen-part series that is anything but static.

Where the book is rigorous and intellectual, the series is human, energetic, and alive. It explores men and the spaces they inhabit with personality, humor, and quiet truths. Through director Elmi de Pauw’s lens, interiors become stages, and men reveal themselves without artifice.

“The moment I purchased Masculus, I thought it would be fascinating to share its spirit with a wider audience. I do not even page my books—they are sacred. They have colours, moods, identities.

They are not only books; they are characters. Film, to me, is pages in movement,” says Eugene Coetzee, founder of Eugene Coetzee Décor & Design Consultants and co-presenter of the series.

Coetzee’s perspective complements Smit’s original vision. The book remains sovereign, while the series echoes its human dimension, capturing gestures, moods, and moments that often go unnoticed.

“I created Masculus – The Male Domain because I love Coffee Table Books,” Smit reflects. “They are necessary. They live in the open—bold, large, unapologetic. Film does not replace the book. It breathes alongside it.”

Produced by Walla Films, with the support of IFX Brokers, Tussen mure demonstrates South Africa’s creative capacity to merge design, story, and character on screen. Each episode is a careful study of human life inside interiors—revealing laughter, confessions, and stories that linger long after the final frame.

The series premieres Sunday, 5 October at 17:30 on kykNET (DStv Channel 144) and will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up. In the end, Tussen mure is not just about walls—it’s about the people who live within them, and the imperfect, honest, and intimate moments that make their spaces come alive.
