Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed changes to his backline for the upcoming Rugby Championship match, with Damian de Allende sidelined and Cheslin Kolbe not yet selected, both due to minor injuries.
Erasmus has turned to Andre Esterhuizen and Edwill van der Merwe to step into key roles, citing recent form and squad depth as reasons for the adjustments.
SPRINGBOKS REVEAL EXTENT OF INJURIES
De Allende will not feature in this weekend’s Springbok lineup due to a back niggle picked up during training. Erasmus confirmed that the experienced midfielder has been managing discomfort for the past two weeks and will continue to train under medical supervision.
“Andre has been strong for us in the last few seasons,” Erasmus said. “It was an easy decision to name him alongside Jesse in the midfield.”
Esterhuizen’s physicality and recent consistency make him a reliable choice as South Africa look to build momentum early in the Rugby Championship.
On the wing, Cheslin Kolbe has recovered from his own niggle and returned to training. However, the Bok coaches have chosen to give the speedster additional time to build full match readiness.
“Cheslin trained with us last week,” said Erasmus. “But we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him.”
With Kolbe unavailable, Edwill van der Merwe earns a start after a strong domestic season. His pace and sharp finishing have impressed the coaching staff, and Erasmus is eager to see how he performs at international level.
“Edwill has been in good form this season,” Erasmus said. “It will be good to see what he brings in this match.”
The changes reflect a measured approach from Erasmus, balancing player welfare with the demands of high-intensity competition. Both De Allende and Kolbe are expected to return to selection contention soon, while Esterhuizen and Van der Merwe have the opportunity to make their mark.
The Springboks open their campaign with a home fixture against Australia, who arrive on the back of encouraging performances against the British & Irish Lions.
