US retail giant Target said its India global capability centre in Bengaluru now accounts for 40 percent of its international technology workforce, highlighting the strategic role the GCC plays in driving the retailer’s enterprise-wide AI and digital transformation.
Speaking at a media roundtable in Bengaluru, Target executive vice president and chief information and product officer Prat Vemana, said the Bengaluru centre is at the heart of several core technology initiatives, including rebuilding the company’s data ecosystem and AI architecture.
“Bangalore office is playing a significant role in our tech portfolio. Forty percent of my teams are here,” Vemana said. India centre is leading work on data engineering, semantic and context engineering, while AI platform development is shared between teams in India and the US.
Target’s India GCC, which employs around 5,700 people, has evolved beyond a traditional offshore technology centre into what the company describes as an integrated headquarters, with teams spanning merchandising, store design, finance, marketing and operations alongside technology.
About 40 percent of its Bengaluru workforce is engaged in technology functions.
The company said Bengaluru is playing a critical role as Target transitions from using AI to running on AI, an effort that involves rearchitecting its technology stack, data infrastructure and governance framework to support enterprise-wide AI adoption.
“We are completely rearchitecting for AI readiness across the board,” Vemana said, adding the retailer is redesigning systems originally built for human users to support AI agents and autonomous decision-making.
On hiring, company executives said AI is reshaping skills rather than reducing headcount.
“It’s not so much the impact on hiring. It’s changing our existing workforce and the way they go about doing their job,” said Brad Thompson, senior vice president, technology, Target.
The company is investing heavily in reskilling engineers and data scientists to work with AI tools.
Andrea Zimmerman, senior vice president and president of Target in India, said the Bengaluru centre’s growth would not be measured solely by employee numbers but by expanding ownership of strategic capabilities.
