There’s something timeless about a South African road trip.

Whether you’re tracing the N1 from Cape Town to Joburg, meandering along the R62, or hugging the wild beauty of the N2, the journey is as memorable as the destination. But no road trip is complete without those essential pauses. A charming roadside café for coffee and koeksisters, a quirky padstal stacked with biltong and jams, or a boutique guesthouse where the stars feel close enough to touch. Here’s your guide to some of the country’s best rest stops and roadside spots perfect for refuelling body, mind, and soul.

    1. Diesel & Crème – Barrydale, Route 62

On the legendary R62, Diesel & Crème is practically an institution. This is a  retro-style diner with South African flair. Their gourmet milkshakes (think salted caramel popcorn or peanut butter brownie) are almost as famous as their burgers. The adjoining Karoo Moon Motel offers boutique rooms for an overnight stay with vintage charm.

    2. Nanaga Farm Stall – N2, Eastern Cape

Halfway between Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), Nanaga is the stuff of road trip legend. It’s been serving travellers since 1968, and the pies are reason enough to stop — flaky, buttery, and filled with homemade goodness. Stock up on rusks, preserves, or droëwors before hitting the road again.

    3. Blueberry Café – Nottingham Road, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Perched high above the rolling green Midlands, Blueberry Café is worth every detour from the N3. You’ll find artisanal breakfasts, freshly baked pastries, and views that stretch forever. The café shares space with a small art gallery and farm shop, perfect for a mid-morning wander.

    4. Travellers Rest Farm – Clanwilliam, Cederberg

For those venturing along the N7 towards Namibia or exploring the Cederberg, Travellers Rest offers rustic charm and deep tranquility. Stone cottages dot the farm, surrounded by ochre mountains and San rock art trails. It’s the perfect slow-down in the middle of a long roadtrip.

5.Teniqua Treetops – Between George and Knysna, N2

If you’re cruising along the Garden Route, Teniqua Treetops offers a magical overnight stop. The eco-friendly cabins are suspended among the forest canopy, part fairy-tale, part wilderness escape. Wake up to birdsong and mist drifting through the trees before continuing along the coast.

6.Harrismith Inn – Harrismith, Free State

Perfectly placed between Durban and Joburg, this classic stop on the N3 is a blend of convenience and comfort. It’s an old-school hotel that’s stood the test of time, ideal for weary drivers or families needing a break.

    7. Peregrine Farm Stall – Elgin Valley, Western Cape

No Cape road trip is complete without a stop at Peregrine. This elegant yet homey farm stall on the N2 serves seasonal meals, artisanal breads, and arguably the best apple pie in South Africa. You’ll also find a deli stocked with local produce, cider, and gifts.

    Final stretch

From retro roadside diners to the lush hills of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa’s roads are dotted with places that turn pit stops into highlights. So next time you set out, plan less and linger more — the journey itself might just be the best destination.
