The increase of two lanes to four is set to double capacity and ease traffic flow at one of the city’s key intersections

If you’ve lived in Dubai for more than a week, you’re likely to have sat in Hessa Street traffic. But congestion on Hessa is set to be alleviated as the first phase of the Hessa Street development project is now open. In phase one, Hessa Street has been widened from two lanes to four in the direction from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Zayed Road, doubling the capacity for those heading from Al Khail to SZR.

In addition, construction is now complete on bridges at the intersections of Hessa Street with Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street, and Sheikh Zayed Road, expanding the road to four lanes in each direction, to further improve traffic flow.

The news was announced on Dubai Media Office’s social channels on Sunday, January 11.

The wider Dhs690 million Hessa Development project is now at 90% complete, with everything set to be finished and open by Q2 of this year. When complete, the project will see Hessa Street extended to four lanes in both directions, the development of four major intersections, a new 13.5km cycling track added, and two bridges for cycling and pedestrians.

The project will double traffic capacity on Hessa Street, increasing capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

So whether you’re taking Hessa on two wheels, four wheels, or on foot, it should be a lot quicker – and smoother – very soon.
