South African designer Thebe Magugu unveiled the limited-edition Lineage collection, featuring clothing and a fragrance, in Midrand, South Africa. The presentation took place at the flagship two-storey Woolworths store at Mall of Africa as part of Heritage Month, TimesLIVE reports.

Heritage in contemporary clothing

Magugu, who is from Kimberley, said that in his work he seeks to combine cultural heritage with a contemporary lifestyle. The designer described himself as a representative of the Sotho people and mentioned the seanamarena blanket and mokorotlo straw hat, traditional to this culture.

According to him, heritage should leave room for reinterpretation: motifs or prints can be transferred onto cotton or silk garments. He called this balance between cultural belonging and contemporary life the core philosophy of his work.

Abstract motifs

The collection features hand-drawn abstract motifs that reference the African landscape. Magugu said he wanted to leave the clothing open to different interpretations while also conveying recognisable images, including those associated with returning home for Christmas.

During the launch, the designer took part in a panel discussion with Woolworths representatives Brian Mtongana and Philippa Elson, moderated by Nandi Dlepu. Actress Jessica Nkosi, influencer Tshepi Vundla and Boity Thulo also attended the event. One of the collection’s skirts has already sold out online.

In 2019, Magugu became the first African to win the LVMH Young Designer Prize. The current collaboration with Woolworths continued his partnership with the retailer, which began nearly ten years ago as part of the Style by South Africa capsule project at South African Fashion Week.
