Thembi Kgatlana and her Tigres UANL team were crowned Liga MX Femenil champions following a 1-nil victory over Club América at the Estadio Universitario on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, Mexico, on Sunday, 23 November.

Tigres went into the El Volcán tie unbeaten and was determined to make history, and a solitary first-half goal by Diana Ordóñez was enough to secure the championship, taking the champions to a record seventh league title.

From the gsport Newsroom Archives, July 2024

An emotional Kgatlana spoke after the match on Tigres’s X page as she was held back tears first. She expressed her utter happiness and pride in Spanish, then went on to say what a momentous occasion it was.

“We have the Cup after so many challenges. I think this Cup is for them (fans) and for this badge. We’re going to go home and celebrate the Cup; it has been a long season.”

From the gsport Newsroom Archives, October 2025

Since Kgatlana joined the club in December 2023 for what was a record league fee at the time, and she has cemented herself as a fan favourite.

A seasoned player who has built her career as a South African international and in leagues all over the world, Kgatlana helped her pro Mexican team to big victories over the last two seasons, and will be hoping this title can bring even more success to her and Tigres UANL.
