Lanseria International Airport, South Africa’s only privately-owned international airport, is set for a possible name change.

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero confirmed the development during his State of the City Address on 8 May 2025, reports African Insider.

“We are informed that the airport management is contemplating renaming the facility to more closely reflect and celebrate its connection to our city,” said Morero. “The city will support this initiative, which will strengthen the airport brand and foster a stronger sense of belonging.”

The name change is part of a broader strategy to grow Lanseria’s identity and expand its role in regional aviation.

The airport, founded in 1972 and operational since 1974, has a notable history — including receiving Nelson Mandela in 1990 after his release from prison.

Lanseria is also currently undergoing developments aimed at increasing capacity and attracting more regional carriers.

These developments include a new fuel depot, air traffic control tower, maintenance and repair facilities, and improved taxiways.

Lanseria International Airport CEO Rampa Rammopo believes that the new facilities will address the limitations of the current site, which might deter some airlines.
