On Tuesday, the United Nations refugee agency confirmed that 144 individuals perished or disappeared off the Mauritanian coast while trying to reach Europe. This total follows three distinct rescue missions carried out from July 14 to 18.
One particularly distressing event involved a vessel originating from Bufaloto, Gambia, which resulted in the deaths of 143 people. After 25 arduous days adrift, the boat was rescued, carrying 38 survivors along with many deceased, as verified by UNHCR personnel upon their arrival in Nouadhibou, Mauritania.
Among those who survived were two children whose families tragically perished during the voyage. These occurrences highlight the pressing demand for enhanced educational and employment prospects across Africa, with the goal of deterring such hazardous journeys.
