The accident occurred early in the morning, prompting a swift response from both fellow runners and emergency services.
As the runner fell, her companions quickly sprang into action. Unable to gain a cellphone signal in the remote area, they embarked on a strenuous hike to higher ground to summon help, ultimately contacting emergency services at 021 937 0300.
The Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams were promptly activated, and their skilled members were able to locate the group near the Overseers Hut.
In a commendable display of teamwork, the injured runner’s companions carried her to shelter and ensured she remained warm while waiting for assistance.
Once the rescuers arrived, the injured runner was assessed and treated on-site by a paramedic from the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS.
After receiving the necessary care, she was transported down the mountain and transferred to a waiting ambulance. Thankfully, reports indicate that she has since been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.
In light of the incident, WSAR spokesperson David Nel commended the quick thinking and teamwork displayed by the injured runner’s companions. ‘She was fortunate to be part of a group,’ Nel stated.
‘Incidents like this highlight the importance of not venturing into the wilderness alone.’
He urged outdoor enthusiasts to carry basic emergency supplies, including warm clothing, which could be critical in an emergency situation.
‘We wish her a full and speedy recovery,’ he added.
