DJ Lamiez Holworthy traded a South African winter and a personal July tradition she has kept since 2012 for something she clearly has no regrets about: performing at Afro Nation Portugal as part of the Hennessy partnership that took her from Cognac to the coast
Before performing, Lamiez gave her followers a detailed account of her arrival, which began at Hennessy House and included brunch, a cognac tasting at the headquarters, a virtual experience at The Hennessy Visitées, and a stop at the boutique
“From brunch at the Hennessy House to cognac tasting at the headquarters, my heart is full,” she wrote, signing off the post with her trademark enthusiasm before heading to the Hennessy Sky Terrace to headline
On performance day, Lamiez was candid about the physical toll and how little it mattered. Dressed in custom Orapeleng Modutle looks for the festival, she took to the Hennessy Sky Terrace and let the crowd do the rest
“Day one of Hennessy x Afro Nation and my body is in shock. One at how much fun I had, but two at the people. I can never get used to the love,” she wrote
The Piano People stage
On her final day, Lamiez joined the Piano People stage, a dedicated showcase of South African amapiano talent that proved, once again, that the genre belongs to the world now
She did not make it through without incident. Mid-set, she tripped over a fan, something she blamed on either her “Howdy Neighbour boots” or knees that, by her own admission, may be giving up on her. She performed anyway. Njelic pulled her back up, and they carried on
MaWhoo brought down the vocals, and the crowd sang every word back. Kelvin Momo, beloved for his private school amapiano sound, played as the sun disappeared behind Praia da Rocha, delivering one of those Afro Nation moments that gets talked about long after the weekend ends. Focalistic closed the stage. Ke Star to the world. One for the archives
The full Piano People lineup, headlined by Kelvin Momo, Uncle Waffles, Focalistic and Madumane, also featured Daliwonga, DJ Lag, DJ Tshegu, Felo Le Tee, Lee McKrazy, MaWhoo, Mellow and Sleazy, Njelic, Nkosazana Daughter, Que DJ, Royal MusiQ, Scotts Maphuma, Skyla Tylaa, Success SA, Zee Nxumalo and Amaroto
Tyla
Friday evening belonged to Tyla. She headlined the Everything is Lit stage alongside Burna Boy, Uncle Waffles and Zee Nxumalo, and she did not arrive quietly
She was wheeled onto the stage on a moving platform, flanked by dancers, as Is It Love played beneath her. She paused. She stared at the crowd. The screaming got louder. Then she began to sing
Her set included Dynamite, her collaboration with Wizkid, which landed exactly as expected. The crowd knew every word, and Portugal knew exactly who she was
