Washington, D.C. – In a significant escalation of immigration enforcement, former President Donald Trump has ordered the deportation of 1,736 Cameroonians currently residing illegally in the United States. This move is part of a broader initiative targeting undocumented immigrants, a group that now exceeds 1 million individuals nationwide.

The targeted group includes individuals from various countries, with the majority hailing from Southern American nations such as Honduras, Mexico, and El Salvador. According to a November 2024 document prepared under the Biden administration, these countries represent the largest share of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

However, not all deportations can be immediately executed. The document, which outlines Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) procedures, specifies that several legal and logistical challenges can delay or prevent removals. It states:

“There are several reasons why ICE is unable to effectuate removals. Under Title 8 of the U.S. Code, ICE may remove noncitizens from the United States who are subject to final orders of removal issued by an immigration judge or other lawful orders, including those processed under expedited removal who either have not claimed a fear of return or received a negative credible fear determination affirmed by an immigration judge. However, this does not guarantee every person seeking to remain in the United States will be able to do so.”

The document highlights that individuals who have expressed credible fears of persecution or have unresolved asylum claims may not be immediately deported. Nevertheless, this policy does not preclude eventual removal once legal processes have been exhausted.

This development comes on the heels of a record-breaking year for deportations. In fiscal year 2024, the Biden administration deported 271,484 individuals to 192 countries.

Happening in Ambazonia in the conflict between Ambazonia and Cameroon, this is why people fear deportation

For Cameroonians, the deportations carry significant implications, as many hail from the two Anglophone regions plagued by ongoing conflicts. Advocacy groups have urged caution in this particular case, emphasizing that deportations could expose returnees to persecution and violence.

As Trump intensifies his immigration crackdown, legal experts and human rights organizations are closely monitoring how these policies will impact vulnerable populations, particularly those fleeing conflict zones. The situation underscores the complexities of balancing immigration enforcement with humanitarian concerns.

With heightened scrutiny on immigration policies, the fate of thousands of individuals remains uncertain as the U.S. grapples with balancing national security and human rights obligations.
