The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest province, yet one of its least explored.

From the star-filled skies of the Karoo to the fiery blossoms of the Namaqualand, the Northern Cape is a region that caters to various types of travellers.

Why the Northern Cape is worth the journey

The province’s isolation is its greatest charm. Away from the crowds, you can truly connect with the land. The air here is crisp and quiet. The only sounds you hear are wind, wildlife and the crunch of gravel you’re walking on. It is a place of raw beauty, but also stark contrasts. It’s a region perfect for adventure seekers. Here are the places you must include in your itinerary on your next trip to the Northern Cape.

Spots to include in your itinerary

    Upington and the Orange River

Begin your adventure in Upington, the friendly gateway to the Northern Cape. Enjoy a walk along the riverbanks, sample local wines, and unwind with a sunset cruise on the Orange River.

Travel west to the mighty Augrabies Falls. Spend the day exploring the park’s walking trails and lookout points as the roar of the falls echoes through the gorge. The golden light at sunset paints the rocks in fiery hues.

    Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Head north to the remote red dunes of the Kgalagadi. Watch herds of gemsbok and springbok cross the sands and listen for the deep calls of lions at night. Camp under the stars for a true wilderness experience.

If travelling between August and September, turn west toward Namaqualand. The once-barren earth transforms into a living canvas of orange, purple, and yellow blooms. Explore the towns of Springbok and Kamieskroon and meet locals who celebrate the season with open arms.

    Tankwa Karoo National Park

Journey south into the Tankwa Karoo. This desertscape feels almost otherworldly, with wide open plains and rugged mountains. Stay in a restored farmhouse or rustic campsite and spend your evening stargazing in absolute silence.

    Sutherland’s starry skies

End your trip in Sutherland. Visit the observatory, wander through its quiet streets, and gaze up at one of the clearest night skies in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the perfect finale to a journey through South Africa’s wild heart.

The Northern Cape leaves its mark long after you have gone. Its landscapes are endless and its stillness is unforgettable.
