An American millionaire was fatally gored by a buffalo he was hunting during a safari expedition in Limpopo this past Sunday.

Asher Watkins, 52, had reportedly paid approximately R177,221 to Coernraad Vermaak Safaris to take part in a big game hunting trip in which he intended to stalk and shoot wild animals, as previously reported by IOL.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA,” said Hans Vermaak, a representative of the safari company, in an official statement.

“On Sunday, while on a hunting safari with us in Limpopo province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.

“He was tracking it together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers. This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his loved ones.”

According to the company, Cape buffalo are among the most dangerous animals to hunt. On their website, Coernraad Vermaak Safaris states:

“Responsible for several deaths and many injuries to hunters each year, the buffalo is regarded as the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa, let alone the world.”

They further describe the species as “crafty and combative,” known to seek cover in dense bush when injured or threatened, and capable of unprovoked charges.

“The old saying, ‘walk slowly and carry a big stick’ could not ring truer when describing a follow-up on a buffalo that has a bullet in it! Buffalo hunting is exhilarating, placing this formidable species at the top of every hunter’s wish list,” the safari notes.

Hunting in South Africa is regulated and requires proper authorisation, particularly for dangerous game such as buffalo or lion. According to Avula Safaris, permits are issued in limited quantities, and several species, including rhinos and wild dogs, are strictly protected under national law.
