South Africa has added Brazil to its visa-free travel list for leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) travellers, making it easier for South African passport holders to visit the South American destination.
The update, which took effect on 7 March 2026, allows South Africans to travel to Brazil without applying for a visa in advance. Visitors can stay for up to 90 days within a calendar year, provided they meet standard entry requirements.
The move removes the need for the previous consular process, which required travellers to submit documentation and pay visa fees before departure. For tourists and business travellers alike, the change simplifies trip planning and allows for more spontaneous travel between the two countries.
The visa exemption covers tourism, conferences and short-term business meetings, making it particularly relevant for MICE travellers and corporate visitors. However, travellers intending to work in Brazil will still need to apply for the appropriate work visa.
Industry observers say the change could encourage stronger tourism flows between the countries. Brazil’s tourism authorities expect an increase in South African arrivals, particularly as airlines evaluate expanding routes between Johannesburg and São Paulo during quieter travel periods.
For travellers, the practical requirements remain straightforward. Visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months and may be asked to show proof of onward travel or accommodation when entering the country.
Brazil has long been an attractive destination for South Africans, thanks to its mix of vibrant cities, Atlantic beaches and rainforest landscapes. With the visa requirement now removed, visiting places such as Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo could become far easier for leisure travellers and business visitors alike.
