BEIJING — China has declared it will not be intimidated by the United States following the implementation of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico. “We never allow ourselves to be domineered or bullied,” asserted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, emphasizing China’s readiness to defend its national interests.
On March 4, 2025, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside increasing tariffs on Chinese goods from 10% to 20%. These measures aim to pressure these nations to address issues related to the production and distribution of fentanyl, contributing to the U.S. opioid crisis.
In retaliation, China announced additional tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on specific U.S. imports, effective March 10. The Chinese government also filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization, asserting that the U.S. tariffs violate international trade rules.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized the U.S. for imposing “arbitrary tariffs,” accusing Washington of “meeting good with evil.” He emphasized that such actions strain U.S.-China relations and undermine bilateral trust.
The escalating trade tensions have raised concerns about global economic stability. Financial markets have experienced volatility, with stock indices reacting negatively to the tariff announcements. Analysts warn that prolonged trade disputes could disrupt supply chains, increase consumer prices, and slow economic growth worldwide.
Amid the escalating tensions, international leaders are urging both the U.S. and China to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences. The global community emphasizes the importance of cooperation and adherence to international trade norms to maintain economic stability and growth.
