The Western Cape Department of Social Development has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and teens by opening child and youth care centres — the first of their kind in the province.

These centres are designed to provide safe spaces for young people who have experienced abuse, neglect, or challenging circumstances, giving them an environment where they can begin to heal and rebuild their lives.

The centres go beyond offering shelter. They aim to rehabilitate troubled youth and equip them with the tools needed to thrive. MEC for Social Development, Jaco Londt, highlighted the department’s holistic approach.

“We also have professionals, our social workers, the child and youth care workers, occupational therapists that work with the children, that work through their trauma, that work in how do you get that control,” said Londt.

By integrating therapy and rehabilitation, the programme seeks to restore dignity, stability, and hope for affected children.

These youth care centres mark a milestone for the Western Cape. They are the first dedicated facilities in the province to focus on combining safety, therapy, and rehabilitation for at-risk children.

The department believes these spaces will play a critical role in breaking cycles of trauma while empowering young people with a brighter future.
