Grant Williams says the Springboks are prepared for Japan’s high-tempo approach when the teams clash at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
The Sharks scrumhalf, who has been named among the replacements for the Boks’ tour opener, is expecting a frantic start from Eddie Jones’ side as South Africa aim to begin their European tour on a winning note.
“I’m really looking forward to playing against Japan,” said Williams. “I know they play really fast, especially the venue we’re playing at on Saturday – it’s a fast pitch and my first time playing at Wembley, so I’m looking forward to it.”
The 29-year-old highlighted the sharpness of Japan’s halfbacks and said the Springboks would need to control the tempo to impose their game.
“They are really good, and really fast. We had a look at them, and it’s going to be really hard for us if we don’t slow down their ball.”

Williams emphasised the importance of taking the tour one game at a time, with upcoming Tests against France, Italy, Ireland and Wales still to follow.
“We can’t look too far ahead – the first job is to make sure we play well against Japan and if all goes well, then we’re all set up for the rest of the tour,” he said.

The fleet-footed scrummie says the weather won’t be a factor for the Boks and that they’re ready for any conditions they might face at Wembley.
“I think our game plan suits whatever weather is thrown at us. If it’s wet, we know we’ve got a strong kicking game, and if it’s dry, we know we can move the ball and have the South African way of doing things with some physicality, so I think we are well prepared.”
